About Sumthing

Purpose first, profit later

Where does your money actually go?

At Sumthing, we believe this should be completely transparent: for every €6 you contribute, €5 goes directly to the nature projects you support. The remaining €1 (17%) is used to keep the Sumthing platform running, grow our movement and show you what is happening on the ground.

On your profile, you can see the impact your contribution makes. You can see how ecosystems are recovering and how projects are progressing over time through updates, photos and data from the field.

How our business model works

Sumthing is a steward-owned company. This means we’re a not-for-profit organisation built around a clear goal: giving nature the comeback she deserves. That goal comes to life in our mission: uniting millions in nature’s comeback.

We are allowed to make a profit, but profit is never the goal. It is a means to strengthen the organisation and increase our impact over time. Any financial return is always in service of nature.

Our fee explained

Maybe you’re wondering: why don’t we pass on 100% of your contribution to the nature projects we work with?

Every organisation, whether for-profit or non-profit, has to deal with certain costs they need to cover. They need to pay salaries, IT, marketing or customer acquisition fees, and other costs essential to run the organisation. The average percentage overhead cost for non-profit organisatons is around 15 to 20%. We use a fixed 17% to fund the work behind the impact.

Getting 100% of your contribution to nature simply doesn’t exist. The ambition to keep your costs as low as possible does exist, however. We think it's crucial to be upfront about where your money goes.

So, with your contribution, you help us to:

  • Build and improve our platform
  • Select and verify projects
  • Collect and share updates from the field

Ultimately, these things help us realise our mission. That’s why we are open about our fee.

Steward-owned

We have structured Sumthing in a way that ensures the mission always comes first.

Sumthing is steward-owned. Steward ownership has two core principles:

  • At Sumthing, control sits with stewards who protect the mission, rather than shareholders focused on profit maximisation. This means short-term financial returns never determine our strategy or direction.
  • Profit serves the mission. Founders and investors receive fair compensation, while the remaining profits are reinvested to further accelerate our mission: uniting millions in nature’s comeback.

It also means the company cannot be sold for profit, and that major decisions must always contribute to our mission. We chose this structure deliberately, so that everyone who supports Sumthing knows what kind of organisation they are backing, now and in the future.

Part of a broader movement

We are part of a growing group of organisations built this way.
Companies like Patagonia, Ecosia and Triodos Bank have chosen similar ownership structures to ensure their mission remains at the centre of everything they do.

Transparency works

If you choose to support Sumthing, you should know exactly how it works. Where your money goes, what it enables, and how you can follow the results.

No hidden structures, no vague promises, just a model designed to create real, visible impact.
